Carolina Bird WatchersA Poem by Josie E. Cook M. A.Expert notes and viewing pleasures sought...Carolina Bird Watchers
They come out in the early Hours with their binoculars And full backpacks Hoping to beat the crowd To take in the royal feathered Flying habitat, Those black skimmers, oystercatchers, Plovers, and sandpipers enjoying The brightening skies, Hoping to see an endangered red knot Looking for horseshoe eggs, Vivid colors on the shores, Bring unbridled joy with Hope for a cornucopia of shorebirds To capture on film, As one observes their habits And patterns, Intense concentration and patience While quickly moving in silence To have the best image Before these feisty feathered Creatures move on to another Location beyond this spread, Migrating birds with low energy Are within this crowd Trying to evade the tourists With their proud dogs, They squawk and circle, While clustering together Above the ebb and flow On these lapping shorelines, Avoiding unwanted confrontations.
Triumphant watchers gather these Images and make notes in their Journals about these magical beings While hoping to calm them enough To linger a bit longer, Because they often scatter in the breezes And sail off to another coast or inlet With calmer surroundings. "J. E. Cook ©2018
