Our Goals in Life

Our Goals in Life

A Poem by Josie E. Cook M. A.
"

Life, what is our destiny?

"

Our Goals in Life

To spend a lifetime trying to prove

Love to someone is somewhat sad,

because why should we have to do so,

could it not be natural and convenient

instead of an emotion

that needs constant cultivating?

What makes it survive and grow?

One may never know,

However, Crows pair up and stay together.

Can humans do this too?

When should they start to have babies

Together?

Will these new generations stay together

In the future?

To watch these children, grow and mature

is wonderful and rewarding to many of us.

When our grandchildren arrive,

Life feels fulfilled and full for many of us.

Reminders of those absent in our life are

sometimes related to a connection present

in our land,

Living in separate drifting boats on distant

Waters where forming islands populate,

As another unexpected boat comes in

from some growing distance,

This can push our full boat

Into a different location or direction,

Altering our planned course,

while touching our life that now, extends more,

As we often fight against these upcoming curves

and ripples,

that invade our rivers of life,

Could this be wrong to do so?

If we let go, and resist these urges,

And let this new path take us to another

new flowing River,

What will happen in our future?

Will we go back to the place where

We began or float to another superb

Destination to gain more perspective?

This is a lovely piece: the drifting boats, the reference to grandchildren and children.
"...could it not be natural and convenient" Does the word "convenient" suggests love the one you're with?
I agree that one shouldn't have to prove love, but a lover or spouse's love does require some nurturing to last, as opposed to the love of a child or parent that requires no care. I really like this and I will be reading more of your work.

An excellent philosophical musing.....

Your first stanza is something i agree with, a love should be natural and everflowing. However the nature of life in the modern age, the stresses and the pace often results in the need to continuously cultivate this love to make sure that it never does actually wilt under the strain of day to day living.

We only have one life, so why not let the ripples take us on a new adventure? After all we never know just how much fulfillment is around the corner if only we open our hearts and minds to accepting it and taking a chance.

A very interesting write, Josie. Pondering the deep questions we all must confront on our journey through life. Thoughtful work. Well Done.

Will we stay in one rote moat, or perhaps float to a different sea of lessons... I never know... But this poem helped remind me of the neverending quest for "more"... Warmly penned...
