Signaling Colors & PerformancesA Poem by Josie E. Cook M. A.Seasons change and behaviors do too. When the cold air rolls in, I see some frantic behaviors Around the bird feeder, As the white throat sparrows Sing in the trees, The bright colors of autumn Are arriving, Down south, The hickory, sweetgum, dogwood, Oak and maple have already Lost their leaves of color, And have become a faded tapestry on the Forests' floor, One beautiful and lonely Ginkgo tree remains a bright golden hue And it has such lovely fan-shaped leaves Creating a full canopy In the shadow of a building downtown, So, radiant against a wall of white brick, As I replay silent movies inside my head. In the background, I think I hear Violins playing with a three-piece band, Some French tune about the war and Lost hope, Steady rain begins to fall to the earth As I gather up my book in a hurry And dash inside, The cool breeze following me And captured as I slide the door Shut. Winter is on our heels, As I wish for it to stay absent And nonexistent in our land.
