Escape

Escape

A Poem by Josh Mattheu

There was a time, not long ago
The leaves were red and the grass wouldn’t grow
I thought forever that’s all I would see
Look up to realize they’re staring at me
I packed my bags and put them outside
Got in the car and put it in drive
No destination, don’t know where I’ll go
If I keep driving, maybe I’ll know
When I’m there, everyone will see
The stars self-aligned, and I’ll finally be free
If it’s you and me, we’ll take flight,
Soar high and dream
All we know, all we’ve seen
Stays behind with the broken leaves
Here we are, we’ve gone so far
Dreaming and soaring high, we touched the sky
And though I know, I will not look back,
All of it is staying back
All I’ve known, all I’ve seen
Stays behind with the broken leaves
