Extinction

Extinction

A Poem by Josh Matteo
"

I guess it's been a while since I've written last...so here's one I wrote at 3am. Was trying to experiment with assonance.

"

I often hear the claims of them that Earth is better without man.

That putrid wastes would disappear if we were simply just not here.

To imply that dates would be erased and the world left to its rightful owners,

A disgrace it is to betray.

A proposed thought that mankind ceased, that the world will meet its final peace,

Like traffic lights changing at 3 am or what exactly happens in the damn washer when I close the lid and put in some change?

The earth, an unconscious being, unable to ponder mysteries like stars and reasons why bees are fleeing.

Time would simply be fleeting.

That is…if someone was there to feel it leaving.

Question: would a cow be able to tell the difference between a Monet and a Rembrandt?

And I’m sure as hell an ant just can’t describe the romantic beauty of a sunrise or that surprised look you get when you were kissed by someone you love.

To the man who asked if a tree should fall in the woods and no one is there to witness it

(does it make a sound?)

Well, let me rephrase:

Would a falling tree even matter if no one is there to prescribe it meaning?

But through these convoluted lines of verse aimed at an audience wearing earplugs,

What’s the point of filming an orchestra behind a sound-proofed wall?

I hope to god someone here reads sheet music.
