Drifting

Drifting

A Poem by JD Sutter
"

A poem about dark times in life.

"
Adrift at sea in a vessel I cannot pilot
I am slave to the current's every whim
The ebony skies meet the inky swells
Where does one end and the other begin?

Dreams of a pale expanse o'erhead have deserted me
This endless blackness is all I know now
The hands of the clock no longer grip me
I long to escape, but I don't know how.

The rivers of my eyes have overrun their borders
My craft rides the liquid gusts all alone
  Isolation seems my sole companion
The love of a friend is a thing unknown.

I am shattered like a bottle embraced by a brick
Fragments of my world litter the skiff's floor
Powdered years that can never be reclaimed
And the dust of hours which shall be no more.

Tears are the bleeding of the soul, and mine has bled out
What-ifs and could-have-beens haunt my sleeping,
  Swarming memories vex my awakeness
Can something be re-made from these sweepings?
