SusieA Poem by Joe GibsonToday Susie is sevenSusie Shivering snowflakes dance along the cotton drizzled hills of dormant nature. The winds whisper ever so slightly all of its secrets. a little girl in pink striped pajamas awakens in excitement ignited by an unknown fossil fuel it’s her birthday today The small child jumps playfully on her still sleeping parents who reluctantly wake up after minutes of energetic tugs and pushes. Susie is seven today and everyone will know it. She is taken to the toy store where she picks out all the toys she would like as she cheerfully runs down each aisle singing and jumping like a songbird midflight on a sunny morning in July not a care in the world because today Susie is seven today and everyone will know it. Susie gratefully thanks her parents after every slight head nod in approval of what she can buy. after the toy trip of her dreams Susie is taken out to a restaurant where she eats all her favorite foods and she begins to feel a heavy burden upon her heart, she’s starting to become sleepy on her birthday. Susie is than presented a cake as the waiters and waitresses around her sing happy birthday as a smile on her face appears and a heart inside her body begins to brighten up with enough illumination to light three whole cities simultaneously because today Susie is seven, and everyone will know it. Susie is now in her pink striped pajamas in her bed she kisses her mother and father goodnight, followed by the most heartfelt “I love you” one soul could ever fathom… She then awakes in a cold dreary room cramped with sorrows as the brisk winds send her shivering under the rugged covers, today Susie is seven and at the Waterdale orphanage nobody will know it. .
