The Sailor and his DaughterA Poem by joeyholzmanAnd symbolic and image abundant poem about a father sending his daughter off to high school. The Sailor and his Daughter
Whitecaps of word And winds of crass Yet, I thought, how could you stay dry Amid the torrent, my love? To battle against force of such power Must be a tiring ordeal For I was once a sailor Of the vessel you must bear Sentimentality was her name A finite ship of pride and pain For four long years we roamed the seas On wind that courage blew The crew was of little to begin as few where strong, nor durable But oddity comes in forms abstract And always carries forth And to battle! survival supersedes reward their cannons flare across the waves We return with silent scorn As proud vigilantes we may appear I could not shake the grey parrot He nests in the topmast and flies to my ear And whispers: Is loneliness your wish? Oh Jessica, I wish you well For few have sailed and lived to tell Take care of your vessel and it shall ever serve To shelter through fire And the storm © 2016 joeyholzmanAuthor's Note
