The Departure

The Departure

A Poem by Joey Wilson

Once a man, one with a full life to lead, now nothing more;

the world took all he held sacred once before.

But once again life showed all is not predictable;

taught him a lesson such as one from a fable.

The son he thought to be his prodigy and his help;

the boy he raised from a little whelp.

The child decided to leave before his time;

the one who knew early on that life was no longer sublime.

The man wondered why the kid had to leave;

and after he asked, the boy simply replied, "In you I no longer believe."

The son quickly apologized for his harsh words, but the damage was done;

to him the father said, "To you I wish the best of luck my son."

Tears filled his eyes as he spoke those words to his child;

and again he spoke, "Please son, just don't let your mercy burn mild."

The son cried as he turned away, and he recited this verse:

"Follow your heart always, it is blessing yet a curse,

but no matter what it is, the heart is always singing a song

and my experiences have shown me that it is never wrong."
