From A Mother to Her Child, A SoldierA Poem by Joan Spahr, Soul PoetryA mother, describing her protective instinct, expresses what she would do to keep her child , a soldier, safe and dreading the worst.FROM A MOTHER TO HER CHILD, A SOLDIER “It’s coming”, says the Darkness, “It’s coming”, says the Fear, “It’s coming”, says the anxious breath That fights through groaning tears. “Stay back”, I warn the Darkness, “Stay back”, I warn the Fear, “I’ll pierce through darkest heaven, And curse your blood-red tears”. I’ll crawl ‘cross poisoned perfume fields, Swim waves on white " capped seas, Through forests dimmed by darkest gloom, I’ll fight to keep you free. I’ll leap the widest chasm, Crash blind into the night, I’ll pitch through all man’s pestilence To pull you to the Light. As time is never-ending, As black and white repel, As bold and blinding is the sun I’ll lift you from this hell. My love will warm your whispers, That fear the chill of death. And all the star-shine of the heav’ns Will cleanse your spirit’s breath. Hold on, dear one, I’m coming, Hold on and never doubt The love I bring will heal your sting And scorch your illness out. No army can defeat me, No natural crisis claim The love that lives inside my heart, Will bring you home again. © 2013 Joan Spahr, Soul Poetry |
