Desolation or Dullness

Desolation or Dullness

A Poem by Justin August
"

Well? Where are you at?

"
How do you know when the loneliness,
the silence, the endless drawl of the
oscillating fan keeping you just
cool enough to not be raging from heat
stops being sad and starts being life?

Eventually what once was the worst
pain imaginable, the anguish of wanting
a shining sign in the dark to break through,
but you find only emptiness staring back
and it becomes a Tuesday, with a drink in hand and the TV on.

Slowly, surely, waiting for someone to be that
light and reach through the void to find
not just you but your heart, you eventually
realize that it's still Tuesday, and that's just
you imagining what could be or could have been.

When desolation slips into dullness,
there is nothing more to be had
until one day, when you look around
and realize that it no longer is desolation.
Your feeling has become your life.

So let me ask. Have you gotten there yet?
If not, consider yourself lucky.
Love it.
Cherish it.
Because it will happen. But when?
