Silence In Suburbia

Silence In Suburbia

A Story by Josh Lanier
"

Flash fiction story. Part of upcoming short story.

"
We all lived in cookie cutter houses, and from the outside looking in, there was a sense of peace and happiness among the families living in our quiet neighborhood.

My best friend, David, lived next door and we'd play for hours in our adjoining backyards. His dad, Harold, was a Vietnam vet and we'd only see him when he was either going to work, or coming home in the evenings. He and my dad never spoke, they'd just nod politely from their respected driveways.

David's mom, Karen, was a looker. When she'd wash her car in the driveway on Saturdays, she'd  get a lot of attention from the men on our street.  Late at night, we could hear cries and the sounds of things breaking, coming from David's house. For days after, Karen would wear long sleeves and dark glasses when she'd go out of the house. Everybody in the neighborhood knew, but nobody did anything.

Interesting so far! I think growing up in the suburbs, I can definitely relate to a story like this one. Can't wait to read the rest.
