Uncertain Decade

Uncertain Decade

A Poem by Jake Kokoris

Take me to Nebraska

he cried to the deaf boy

who each Wednesday

sat on a pale, prickly bench

and waited

for a bus that was always late

Today a steady rain fell

which disturbed the boy

his skin felt invaded by the chilly hard drops

and he didn’t like how frantic

everything seemed

The man continued to yell

not with anger

but with a hectic energy

he was a man with tattered clothing

an unkempt beard

and wild eyes

The boy kept still

he wanted badly to ride today

and didn’t mind the man that much

The man stormed off

in search for another suitor

to bring him to Nebraska

the boy smiled at the way his shoulders shook

and the way single rain drops

clung to his beard

and leapt off

The bus came after mere moments

and the boy entered it with excitement

but he forgot his bus change

so he hopped of the bus

with droopy shoulders

and a defeated brow

He dragged his feet back home

where life was dull and grey

and entered the sitting room

where he found the change he had forgotten

on a shiny table

He rubbed his chin

and decided to grow a beard

to collect rain drops

and maybe

to store coins
