A Home For A NightA Poem by Audrey BrucknerWaking, chilled, in the soft leather seats I trace lonely fingers on the windshield following where the wipers left dusty marks a broken radio allowing silence to relax into its absence a home for a night the bouncing raindrops are a welcome sound a vacation from slurred voices and earth shaking shouts I could run two sanctuaries wait down the road but a quick glance at the clock dashes the idea My guardian angels dream no us waking them for me minutes pass, close to the sweet world of dreams my eyes roll open noticing your gaze quickly inebriation plastered on your face a sinking feeling overwhelms me as I retrace the good points of my childhood I find few All heartbeats playing into the situation popping open the door you drop silently behind the wheel I roll out seemingly unnoticed the sound of your car pulling away haunts me as i drag my heels to my front door you were not welcome here you are not safe out there guilt guides me into sleep how selfish was I? to allow you to plague the streets where decent mothers and fathers drive I pray for their safety tonight a tear rolling warm placing blame on my head as she dizzily drives the roads a family could lose someone they love all because i selfishly wanted a home for a night © 2011 Audrey Bruckner |
