Wake UpA Poem by Audrey BrucknerWhen he hits her he hurts her he bruises her faith he sips, he swings he bruises her face she dies inside while others cry for the pain she feels but they don't know why cause they don't know what goes on behind closed doors the tears the blood spilled on the floors and swept under the rug so no one can see the pain that now burned into her memory her body tells a story every bruise every scar the most telling of all the crack in her heart cause she loves her father as best as she can but its hard to love someone more monster than man late at night she thinks back before every night was a boxing match she was his little girl he was her role model mom was alive he hadn't met the bottle mom passed away her dad became hollow receded to a dark place no one dare follow the bottle became his friend she became his punching bag he would finish his drink she got ice and a rag he kicks and hurts she hides and cries some nights she wishes she would simply die if she can just make it until she turns eighteen she can leave the house and finally be free but the night before graduation he sucked down his drink threw away the bottle and went to the sink he grabbed the knife and went to her bed he meant to just cut her but she wound up dead the next day he woke up and found what he'd done he checked for a pulse he found none a year has passed he is sober enough unforunately it took a tragedy to make him wake up © 2008 Audrey Bruckner |
