Haunted

Haunted

A Poem by jhed

Haunted

In bed, I lie awake

Staring at the ceiling

Wondering about my mistake

And still kept on believing.

I tried to close my eyes

And sleep with the wind that hums

But all I see are lies

And the knife that soon comes.

I held it against my hand

Believing I did it on purpose

Pulled my hair with a band

And left the door unclose.

I open my eyes and sighed

Knowing it was all but a stupid lie

I know that I almost died

But kept on tormenting those alibi.

I was dragged back into the present

And was leaving the footsteps of the past

Sooner I will be caught by the department

And I know this time wouldn’t last.

My hands are smeared with blood

Not mine but the man that I killed

I washed it and now it felt odd

Soon, I know, I will be billed.

Surprised, I hear the sound of the siren

Rounding on the corner of the street,

I know now, to my family, I’m a burden

So now I do not know how to compete.

The memories always kept me haunted

Flashing unsettled crimes of the past,

Looking back on where it all started

Is like a nightmare that will never last.

Now I stand alone in this crowded room

With people haunted by the experience of their lives,

Every shadow I see, always loom

And with the blink of an eye I see them thrive.

Scary, the feelings are death, despair and paranoia are strong throughout this piece. Nice work.

A very good story of fear and haunting. I like the easy and slow pace to a very good ending.
"My hands are smeared with blood
Not mine but the man that I killed
I washed it and now it felt odd
Soon, I know, I will be billed."
Thank you for the excellent poem.

I did notice you switch back and forth between present and past tense in your verbs occasionally - In bed, I lie awake/Staring at the ceiling/Wondering about my mistake/And still kept on believing. - lie, staring and wondering all in the present tense and then kept in the past. But overall I liked it. I also wonder if the man the narrator killed was someone else or if this is post-suicide.
