Those Words

Those Words

A Poem by Jade Goodnight
"

A love I cannot say

"
I want to say those words.
I feel them scratching, tearing their way up my throat
until they've reached the tip of my tongue.
I bite down hard, so they'll never see the light of day.

I want to say those words.
But instead, I ask about your day,
too afraid that you won't want to hear them.

Those three words continue to eat at my mind and soul,
pleading for me to speak them.

I continue to bite my tongue,
until the inevitable day they'll spill out like pomegranate seeds
from the depths of my core for you to see.

Will you eat them?
Savoring their sour-sweetness.
Or will you let them rot,
never to know the warmth of you.

Hmmm why pomegranate seeds specifically? It doesn't really matter and I think overall for the imagery and descriptiveness, that makes the most sense it just wouldn't have been the first thing I necessarily thought of. (of course I didn't write this either so obviously I wouldn't have thought of that)
I really liked this read. It had a lot of very visual and descriptive components that worked really well. As already mentioned, the pomegranate imagery, the words in your throat, etc. There were also just moments where word choice really worked and made it very physical in a way that can be hard to achieve with just words on paper (or a screen) like 'sour-sweetness' or 'until they've reached the tip of my tongue'.
