The Temptations of the Sea

The Temptations of the Sea

A Poem by Jason Galliger

He sits in an isolation chamber

Filled with blank pages-

slobbering dogs waiting to be fed

their howls echo across the steel hull of his mind

yet all he hears are the sounds of the sea

,a seductive siren song,

and just beneath the surface the glimmer of life

carried by schools of fish.

Encased his heart cries out a thousand blasphemies-

like the lining up of his muses in front of a firing squad

the shots leaving pools of unwritten stanzas-

something to be cleaned by the deck hand later

still he stares out

from between the cracks

in hopes of glimpsing the sea

hoping that he can one day swim endlessly through its depths

and experience its endless wonders

but he is trapped within Plato’s looking glass

seeing only the shape of the world

but never enjoying its bittersweet taste

Longing confinement as seen through a watery lens. I love those third and last paragraphs.

Impressively creative... I loved the language, the metaphors you so effortlessly intertwine in this piece; that third stanza is amazing, and the ending resonates. Masterful work...
