Floating FreeA Poem by Jason GalligerThere’s this feeling Burning It heats me up And burns me out Smoke is building I struggle to get out My eyes water And my skin bleeds Don’t you know it’s you I need? Holding fast To this moving ship One false move and I’ll slip Into the sea Look at me floating Soft Before Sinking deeply As I reach bottom And look up at the shimmering light Its that feeling That pushes me upright Before my lungs give out I breach the surface White rains down upon me And I swear I see halos When I awake Its in a small hospital bed The chair beside it smells of you I reach for the flowers and balloons To find your card not there You don’t seem to care
The next week I stand On the edge Waves crashing beneath me On the sharp rocks I beg you to come running up behind So I don’t have to paint the Cliffside But you never came So I sprouted wings And flew Into the deep eternal blue My lungs burst And I’m wrapped in sweet darkness I see a bright red apple I reach out to take a bite But something is holding me back It’s a snake It pulls me back into the arms Of an angel That looks like you. © 2010 Jason GalligerReviews
