FALL

I knew her once
She came to me a promise unequivocal
Laden with hope, dreams maybe
Shy at first
She’d sit some distance from me
And she’d just stare
Her head tilting this way and that
Her eyes never blinking
She consumed me
This mortal shroud all too peculiar to her
I would reach out
Lean in ever so slightly
My hand outstretched
And she would recoil
Shake her head
The forbidden truth in her eyes
God, those eyes
She would withdraw but yet smile
Even if in the slightest
And I would reach out again
This time while she shied away
Her eyes on the ground
And I touch her cheek
Her face a bolt of lightening
Her eyes a summer storm
A hurricane brewing
But she would place her hand on mine
And my thumb would brush against her skin
I had never heard thunder so silent
Tears like rain
An ocean in each drop
And I would lean in further
Her eyes would close
And softly, gently
Kiss her
Her white robes would flutter
Flutter in a non-existent wind
And that’s when I saw them for the first time
She would move into me
Her hand on my face
Her lips parting
Our tongues speaking languages forgotten
And her wings would spread
And once again she consumed me
Each moment an eternity
She would part her lips to cry
Scream maybe
And she was gone...
But I saw her again once
Much later
This mortal shroud daunted and crumbling
Her white robes lying still
Her wings bound by her choices
Her eyes to the ground
Not shame on her face
Neither anger nor hate
Neither pride nor sorrow
Only the knowing
Only the having done
An endured
She was cast down
She was cast out
Her greatest sin
Once...
She loved...
