The Dig Backwards

The Dig Backwards

A Poem by Jay M. Jones

The Dig Backwards

Shovel in hand, you prepare your excursion underground.

Back into places you have long forgotten.

Back into the dark passages you passed through,

on your way to yourself.

The cobwebs are aged now, and many.

You see feint traces of your footsteps,

and follow them backwards to the place

that started you on your journey.

The torth is lit, and though your surroundings

are familiar, much about them remain unknown

and foreign to you.

A word of caution to those who dig,

make sure you have plenty of crackers

to leave on the ground.

So you can find your way back.
