NY Street at Night (through the eyes of a child)

A Poem by Jay M. Jones

NY Street at Night (through the eyes of a child)

Street lights, all lined up like men
condemned to death by firing squad,

begging for ten more seconds of life,
blindfolded, and scared, but forced to stand upright.

They rest on solid grey earth,
cracked with time and stained with old bubble gum,

trampled on by men with briefcases, and women
who walk the earth pleasing passersby for change.

Towering above them are stone giants,
whose many eyes flicker on and off and whose bellies

Are filled with its captives. People boxed up
and stacked in an old store room, worn with time.

Out in the distance of this black and blue haze
the street lights force themselves in the form of a "V",

the center of this "V" is where dreams reside for children
whose minds are forced open by their hunger.

The great unknown lie before them,
second light to the right and straight on til' morning….

Yes, out of the distance is where the lost might be found.
If you look real close, you can see it….

the future….
