There can be multiple fields, people can invest, but there should be one to focus more where it can give more than other, worth spending the efforts that will never over throw you instead will make you shine and prosper. 

Examples:  

1, Amazon builder, focused on e-business became a trillionaire which stretched in every corner every good. a small idea he turned into business men of world #1.

2. Alibaba - wholesale similar to Amazon, suffered alot before 

3. Microsoft - monoploy in gushing into every computer made him millionaire

4. Apple - focused on quality and look, shining ever from its own make though fired from his own company perseverance into making dreams true inspiring lesson 

5. Elon musk - one after another - grown and finally stretching into 4 times the millionaire - focused on core business areas making him humane. 

A current example which suffered from recession -  Bechtel - family based business for more than 50 yrs, suffered serious set back due to oil price, now stretching into renewable sources, and into silicon business -  strategy changed going into different fields. 

Stretching into multiple is not a difficult when you mother core, similar strategies and source of funding, available with that, exploring new ideas a bit difficult so learning from existing companies is not a bad choice but stil you can do pilot startup and give a shot to the exploring ideas. 

if we take into these biographies definitely they focused on core area business though later stretched into different areas. 

SO focusing on one is worth time saving efforts concentrated  - knows in and out and can fix short term solutions from generations. As a family based business P&G developed into a century everlasting # 1 brand though competitors, R&D is a must though it s a EPC< continuous improvement with lessons learned and improving the strategies stretching into renewable sources like solar power, Hydrogen and still continuing LNG for the chemical fields are important pieces of business.
