To the Tortured Artist

Nothing is rarer in all the universe than human life,

And nothing is rarer in all the universe than you!

Don’t ever think that your life is meaningless,

Though we are but a blip in the universe,

Small though we may seem,

Life is like the rarest of diamonds,

And art is never worth your suffering for art is but an expression of that human life,

And without that life,

The rarest art that exists,

Art would cease to exist.

Think of all the songs and poems you’ve never heard or written,

Hold your happiness in the palm of your hand before it slips through you fingers,

Like a light it can lead to the greatest of places never written about in songs or poetry.

Suffering will find you as you travel through the ups and downs of your life,

You do not have to find it.

For we all suffer and we all live,

Art is but a representation of that life.

This poem brought a smile to my face. I've never really taken the time to really contemplate just how rare a single person is, I love how you made that apparent in your poem. I also love how you acknowledge the fact that without people art, poetry, stories etc would never be born. Really nice poem, it really made me think. Nice Work!

"Suffering will find you... you do not have to find it."

Such an important reminder to all of us who find artistic inspiration in then negatives of life. We do not need to create our own pain to make art; we should relish the times when there's nothing in our lives that would inspire us to write something dark.

Indeed, it is life that is everything. "David," more than anything else, is a monument to the life of Michelangelo. Any artist's life is worth more than his art.
