she was a candle

she was a candle

A Poem by pencil

she was a candle melted down to her core,

a dozen matchsticks had hurt her before.

she promised herself she would never burn again,

and blindly believed she could avoid feeling pain.

then she made a friend and inside something sparked,

he made her promises and they spoke heart-to-heart.

before she could stop it she trusted her friend,

and to her horror she was in love once again.

but this love burned deeper and brighter and hot.

she mistook him for something that he simply was not.

she loved him even as she died from his fire,

because all along, her dear love was a lighter.

i feel like the flow is a bit off in some parts of this. does it seem like it doesn't read as smoothly as it could?
