Leaving

Leaving

A Chapter by J Maredith

I HATED to leave her with James alone but I had to go home so my mother didn’t have a heart attack. And then the third degree burn from her when I got home sucked.

“MAREDTH I TOLD YOU I DON’T LIKE HIM AND YOU KNOW THAT!” She flared her nostrils so much I thought they might turn blue.

“I don’t care I love him and you are not my real mom so you can’t do anything about it!”

She stopped in her tracks like I just slapped her in the face…. Twice.

“Don’t you ever say that again I have took care of you since your scum of parents left you.” She talked through her teeth but I was ready to fight back.

“DON’T YOU EVER TALK ABOUT THEM LIKE THAT AGAIN!”

I stomped up to my room before she could speak and grabbed all my school stuff and some of my photos of friends and an aged picture of my parents holding me.

I called James, “Hay baby can you come and get my like now.”

“Things didn’t go well with your mom?” I picked up the last of the stuff I needed

“She isn’t my mother.’’ I said flatly.

“Ok I’ll be there in five minutes.”

I walked downstairs and she was still standing in the living room flaring he nostrils the only movement is her head following me as I walked around and got my money and keys. My phone rang, “Hello.”

“Hay love I’m out side should I stay out here with the baby or bring her up with me.” I grinned and answered,

“Come on up with her.” I looked at HER and she looked puzzled.

A slight knock at the door about two seconds later loosened my tension. The door opened to block HER view of Edith-Lynn. Edith-Lynn smiled and made a baby noise with her nose and mouth that got HER attention but she remained still.

“Hay my baby mommy loves you.” SHE grunted and I was out the door with Edith-Lynn in my arms.

“That is not your child! The High Council forbids vampire-witch children!” She yelled from the door.

When James and I got in to the car I just laughed and laughed. “What is so funny?” he actually looked mystified like I was going crazy maybe.

“Her face when I said mommy loves you was comical she had no clue what I was talking about.” He looked at me then to our daughter and laughed too.

“James what if she calls the High Council? She said they would forbid it? Is it true?” I may not know a lot from the years SHE had locked me indoors and no allowed me to go to magic school, but I do know who the High Council is the leaders of the magical community. They make all the rules and have an army of magic creature to do their will. Including killing someone if they needed to.

“Love that rule has been lifted, only the Oldest of the Members of the Night still believe that a vampire-witch child will be a danger to the entire magic community.” The Members of the Night were one of the most secret magical groups that have ever existed and they believe whatever the High Council is final. The only reason I know this is because Agitha is the Leader.

From the back off the car I hear something that resembles a laughing toy and I turn around and Edith-Lynn is laughing too.

“James she wanted to be included isn’t cute?” He looks at her then back at the road. “She is just as amazing as her mother!”

We pulled up to OUR house and James helped me out then got Edith-Lynn out of her car seat.

“Welcome to our home Edith-Lynn, we will be here forever.” James was speaking like he was trying to convince himself.

“James it just hit me it has been 5 hours and we have not fed Edith-Lynn!” He turned to me and grinned.

“She ate before we came I took her outside and she went after a fox and caught it. You know the rest.” Edith-Lynn made the same sound as she made before.

“Well at least we know the big question vampire food of human food.”

I went to the kitchen to make me some food. I put Edith-Lynn in a highchair while I cooked but I turned around and found her on the counter in the cabinets.

“What are you doing in there?” I walked over to her and she dropped to her butt and handed me a can of formula.

“Are you still hungry?” she started to make that same noise and shake her head up and down.

“OK.” I said puzzled.

How can she get up to the counter and how did she know where the formula? Did she even drink formula?

I put her backing her highchair but this time I watched her. James came in the kitchen and picked up Edith-Lynn. She laughed and put her hands out for the bottle.

“Does she even drink this stuff?” James looked as confused as I did.

“I don’t know she appeared on the counter and got the stuff out.” I watched her guzzle the bottle down.

“Uh, James where did the formula come from?” She handed me her bottle and I walked to the sink

“Well that answers our question.” James said while I washed her bottle and finished washing my plate. I turned and she had another bottle in her hand.

James and I put her in the room he had made for our future kids. But it was put in to action for Edith-Lynn. She looked so peaceful in her sleep like she had nothing in the world to worry about. I wonder if everyone in the world looked like this in they’re sleep. Is it the world’s only escape where nothing you do will effect you even if you fall off a cliff you will wake up the next morning? But what if it kills you? What if you never wake up? Will it be your prison forever or your kingdom?
