Everything & Nothing

Everything & Nothing

A Poem by jessicawrites

I can no longer tell night from day,

A blur of colors, of time ticking, sand falling

down and rising up and up and up,

And the grains vanishing, and reappearing -

Devoid of sense, without physics.

I watch seconds turn to hours and retreat

Into the mindless joy of non-existence existence,

What it would feel for everything to stop

For a moment.

I lay and feel the numbness, I try to catch

The running thoughts, hold them still,

Try to squeeze them, know them, bury them,

Is this better than nothingness?

"Everything & Nothing", eh.? You're far too modest, sometimes; and this sure seems more than a lot of nothing.! It's sure something! Now, let me see. And, yet the protagonist seems blind; to know what's what in her immediate environment. Almost as if, she's struggling to make sense of it all; trapped in her unique zone of sensory distortion.? The essence of time itself, seems to be touched upon here; in a Jessica Black kind of way.! Indeed, the "grains vanishing and reappearing"; defies the laws of physics. Well, I always suspected that she had that in her. The "blur of colours" indicates visual distortion too, so this protagonist may well not be in a fully stable place. That unstable place being, the protagonist's state of mind and accompanying perception, in terms of what she sees, thinks, feels; and contrasts all of that with the concept of "non-existence". And, ponders what that non-existence might be like for her..? Thanks for sharing with us, making a return to the old WC..!

Hey Jessica,

it's a great poem. the first line grabbed me. as i read on, many memories were evoked. i have experience with psychotic episodes and this was pretty much how it felt. how it felt begging for the hurt to stop, for escape, for attaining nothingness.
