The Chase

The Chase

A Poem by Jessica Bui
"

When the man you have an affair with gets cold feet and you lose everything. You cannot go back to the love of your life anymore, but you can't go forward.

"

I knew when you looked at your rearview mirror

Sirens flashed, the red and blue getting nearer

You hit the brakes at the last minute

If this is the end, I can’t bear witness

You said, “I don’t want to spend my days on the run;

You will find the right someone.”

I burned the only bridge leading me home

And lost the only map I had ever known

Can’t go through the forest when it’s overgrown

Lost the one soul that wasn’t my own

All our secret nights in downtown bars,

I’d have told you to steal a faster car.

Hard to lose that someone who hits all the right spots. A reminder that not all romances work out the way we would wish. Some paths lead to pain. I felt your here.
