Losing The Big One

Losing The Big One

A Poem by Jeremy Bjelland

He sees that it is a good day to fish,

So there he is alone at the shore,

He has a few keepers on the stringer,

Now just waiting to real in some more,

Standing at the shore for hours now,

Now his worms have begun to run low,

He still is looking for that big fish,

To everyone he would love to show,

So he’s there watching the bobber,

Just floating around on top of the lake,

The day has become perfect for fishing,

There are no boats to cause any wake,

He then notices the bobber bouncing,

He watches it move from side to side,

Knowing not to jerk on the pole,

Until under the water the bobber hides,

Finally the bobber goes below the water,

And then yanks to hook the fish,

Yes, he got a fish that is fighting hard,

It is really that big one, he wish,

He is fighting the fish for a while,

Finally, the fish reaches the land,

He cannot keep his excitement,

Reaching for the fish with his hands,

Right before he grabs for the fish,

The fish gets the line to snap,

Then it gets itself back into the lake,

First word comes to his head, “Crap,”

Now what is he going to tell people,

Who’s going to believe what he let go,

Too bad he was there all alone,

He will be the only one who will know.
