They Tried...A Poem by Jennifer M. Pennington
They tried to beat me down
To make me unrecognizable
They tried to keep me small To convince me that I was down-sizable They tried to subdue me To keep me where the spotlight wouldn't reach They tried to confuse me But I wasn't theirs to teach They tried to shame me To make me hate myself They tried to blame me To feel enslaved by everyone else They tried to tame me But I wouldn't be shelved They tried to restrain me But I couldn't be held They tried to abuse me To bruise and batter my soul They tried to defuse me To deconstruct all that made me whole They tried to rewire me To re-calibrate my natural makeup They tried to fire me But I'm flammable to the touch I'm wild They didn't understand I'm passionate They were too dead for that I'm multifaceted They couldn't even face themselves I make my own paradise They were comfortable in hell They tried to condemn me To shackle me to their whim They tried to remove my light To keep my whole world dim They tried and they failed & they'll do so again But I'm a Goddess, you see I'm invincible to your misguided attempts © 2015 Jennifer M.
