Your Big Brown EyesA Poem by jennilouhooA poem I wrote after sitting with my five year old cousin of sorts at a funeral. Him looking at me and whispering "I miss my uncle. He got run'ded over" while tears were in his eyes were just too muchYour big brown eyes stared into mine as your sadness ran down your cheek. That pain and hurt, I saw it all, sitting in your big brown eyes. Damp irises gleamed with loss, I felt your pain as my own, only wishing I could correct it. What can I do for a boy of five years? How can I tell him he's sad now, and he will be in the future? The he'll just get used to the ache in his chest where a joy once bloomed. I couldn't. I couldn't look into those big brown eyes, so full of innocence, so full of light. Every child must learn the lesson of Death's swift visits, and they must face reality. I hope this loss won't change your dispossession. Continue with your loving ways. You may long for something more in the world at only five, but for now, I hope my arm is enough. December 22, 2012
