A DIFFERENT SUMMER NIGHT…A Story by Jennifer WebsterMy thoughts on a certain summer tradition...Some
people in their lives have their traditions; For New Yorkers, it is the WPIX
Yule Log at Christmas. For Chicagoans, it is Svengoolie at Halloween, and that
was back in the day BEFORE he went national. And for Philadelphians,
there is that Thanksgiving Day Parade that is held every Thanksgiving…Well, at
least until it had been called off this year due to the mayor’s moratorium on
large events due to the virus, but more on that in a moment… But for the rest of us, I think that one of the best traditions when it comes to summer is that we have those beautiful summer nights that have always enchanted us when we were kids. When we got older, we would still cherish a summer night, but then there comes a sudden feeling that almost none of us would ever care for such an almost-non-existent tradition as a summer night; and that is mainly because most of us have gotten married, had kids, and that we had so much work and chores to be done in this day and the next, that we now probably do not have the time to ever admire a summer night to create memories with. But alas, there would come a time when good sense would finally prevail, and that most families, if not all, would take their times out of their busy schedules to just look up at the sky and admire a beautiful summer night. And if there was ever a time to
admire such a summer night, then it is certainly right now: As I am writing
this, the country as well as the rest of the world is in the grasp of a
pandemic that has gotten a hold on all of us, without ever knowing, at least
yet, as to when it would all come to an end. With the pandemic that has been
caused by the widespread of the COVID-19 virus still continuing on, perhaps it
may not be all to late for families all across America to consider rethinking
about enjoying summer nights as a family: Maybe they could have a dinner picnic
or even camp out, and watch the glory of nature putting on a fabulous show as
they watch the sunset and the sky turn day into night, and then the stars would
appear, sparkling and shining for every family to see.
You see, a simple summer night really is a time-honored tradition for all of us
in this great country of ours that we call home; and for each and every one of
us, perhaps it might be a good idea to just focus on what is important in our
lives, and then to spend some time with each other by going outside in the
early evening and appreciate the beautiful wonder that is a summer night. ©2020 Jenn Webster
