Then she jumpedA Poem by JennyNicoleAn angel flies awayThey tried to chain her to the realities of the world. With ropes and metal they bound her into submission Silence was her language when they covered her lips with tape And even then her eyes roamed where no footprints had been made In the blanket of dark she dreamed of sunlight And In the waves of light she looked for the stars In her enclosed world there were only blue skies with scrawled maps of lightning to keep her warm They told her she couldn't do it They said her feet were melted to the sand and the stars were merely pin holes far in the distance there to be admired but never grasped So when she jumped their eyes were widened And some of them lost their breathe for the first time ever chains dangled and clanked over the jagged edge like church bells To celebrate an angels final flight Feet hit the air like feathers and toes were confused by the loss And strong wings broke the chains of persecution to glide on the exhale of the saints They watched her disappear into the setting daylight then they trailed back down the same as they had ever been with one memory of heaven that would soon be forgotten
