Any Other DayA Story by Jennifer AdamsAny other day...
Today began just like any other day for Henrietta and her family.
Henrietta and her husband had five children " Toby, Matilda, Mitsy,
Rupert and Dora. Every day was a manic dash to get everyone fed, dressed
and off to school then after school shipped off to their endless
extra-circular antics from squash, riding lessons, polo to ballet. This
was just the way Henrietta loved it.
Henrietta and her family lived in a fairly large estate up in the Scottish highlands and her children attended a prestigious private school nearby. During the week her husband Oscar worked in London as an investment banker and came home to the madhouse at weekends. This particular day while the children were at school she had what felt like an endless list of things to do she had to take the dogs to be clipped, get food shopping, meet a girlfriend for lunch, go to the dry cleaners, clean the girls horses tac, get a car insurance quote, bake for the school coffee morning and visit the parish Vicar to arrange the Christmas party. This morning was like any other day however Henrietta simply could not get going this morning something was stopping her from getting ready for the day but she couldn’t pin point it. As she got dressed in her new skinny jeans, chunky knit and boots she couldn’t think what was wrong. She dried her hair and did her makeup and thought of something that her husband Oscar had said at the weekend. They were sorting through some mail that had come through during the week that Henrietta hadn’t managed to get to and he said to her “Darling don’t bother going through all this dull mail that comes through for me at through the week I’ll sort through it at the weekend. You have so much on with the kids and everything I think it would be best I you just left it.” She convinced herself she was being a paranoid fool and that he was just being nice and helpful. But it was a bit out of character. Oscar was a wonderful husband but he came from the kind of blue blood English family that believed that men worked and women took care of everything else. Something didn’t sit well. The thought floated through her head on and off that day as she got through her mammoth list of tasks. She came home to chuck the food in the cupboards and dash off to ship the kids from school to numerous activities around town. Before she left however she opened the mail. This was a perfectly normal thing to do it was her house and she opened the mail. There was lots of it and this was nothing unusual but just before she left she opened an official looking letter. As she read it through she felt as if she had been repeatedly hit over the head by a solid oak door. © 2010 Jennifer Adams |
