as she slept the dream of aching away,
the half-step metronome
of the grandfather's clock long past winding
disturbed her sleeping flickers
with its irregular pattern while
her fingers tapped the correct pattern
upon her coverlet 

tock

the footsteps within her dream cycled
with their unsteady beat
the leaky faucet in the bathroom 
adding another layer of cacophony to
the dance of unawake limbs
her body tossing unknowingly 
to the tune of a half-mad piper

tick-tock

eyelids flinching with the effort
to deny the dissonance 
created by her hidden lurker
mind whirling with the need for order
heart pounding with the need for chaos
the writer is spinning out of control
pirouetting round a core quickly coming undone
