morning glories, jasmine and the rose of sharon.

morning glories, jasmine and the rose of sharon.

A Poem by jenniewren (J.W. Bouwman)

morning glories, jasmine
and the rose of sharon -
after which you were named...

this tuesday morning
i rose
picked out clothes
(lime greens and browns,
slipping on soft khakis due to the heat)
sorted laundry
made tea and
drank it
sitting on my back deck,
silent fingers curled round the
pale blue hue of my second-best cup,
sukitai bobbing gently on the fraser river
(not so gently when the cargo ships pass)

it was an everyday tuesday:

i talked and joked
made lunch,
washed dishes,
planned for shopping;
continued on with the daily trivial motions
we all choose to fill our hours with

yes, it was all just an everyday tuesday

until
i walked my afternoon walk
up the boat ramp..

bursting blooms of morning glories
with twining spirals of jasmine
were peeking out from amongst
the prickly white-blossomed brambles
of the berry bush i cursed yet loved yearly

(cursed for the snarky thorns that ripped bare flesh
if the bush was left untamed...
yet loved for the sweet summer moment
of purple-stained lips and fingertips)

that single vision jolted me
into childhood memories of hours
spent whispering in the garden
fingers digging, side by side,
learning the world of growing things
which had always so entranced you
kneeling, talking, side by side,
as we planted

morning glories, jasmine
and the rose of sharon -
after which you were named

I loved this jennie!!!!..and probably you know i would..cause it is so very serene and brings a certain peace to readers..there are so many beautiful phrases in it.You have done here what you do best jennie, write about what is seemingly ordinary and everyday..yet when you write about it all..it springs out of what we might call as ordinary and becomes like a miracle..

Beautifully evocative, Jennie, of simpler times and the busy-ness of days. I enjoyed taking this walk with you... thanks so much for the invitation to do so!

This piece has the wonderful ability to tell a story in such a vivid way that it takes its reader along with it.

Frankly, I love writing in which a writer can take normal, day-to-day things and make them seem exotic and beautiful. It had an almost song-like flow (maaybe that is just me!) but the flow was beautiful.

"(cursed for the snarky thorns that ripped bare flesh
if the bush was left untamed...
yet loved for the sweet summer moment
of purple-stained lips and fingertips)"

Fantastic, fantastic stanza! Beautiful imagery and such a gorgeous way to show the two sides of the berry bushes.

The repetition of the first stanza was also a really nice touch.

Oh, how I love poetry that tells a story!

It sounds like a childhood memory of mom. The now adult woman walks in the footsteps of someone who introduced her to the simple pleasures of growing things. But not just ordinary growing things for they not only look like they did but they smell like they did back then and it's as though she's right there with you talking again.

I find your poems are the kind that make one think beyond the simple poem they appear to be. Great job.

You have such a talent to take scenes or moments in life that most over look and turn it into poetic art, like a story beginning to unfold right before our eyes. I think with this one I could hear music playing behind your words and wind lightly blowing. Excellent poetry, loved it.

Gawd I love how you write Jennie!

How life must be in your realm, in your circle... tis a splendid view it is (okay now I've got an english accent all of a sudden... I like it! ha) through these sharon blossom eyes...

An everyday Tuesday?

How must heaven look to you, on a wednesday?
Antonio xx
