Today

today is a day i miss you...

 

this missing has no set schedule

no little beeping sound to tell me

when to expect the sorrow to hit

or musical tone to slowly wake me

 

no i never know the when

or the what

that will set it off -

a simple thought, a wish to share

or coming across

the particular curl of your penmanship

in a book i've not read in a while..

but when it comes

i am struck

with a profound sense of disconnect

of laughter unfinished

of future unshared

and i wonder..

in which baby's gurgle

does your laughter now reside?

This perfectly catches those unexpected moments when a loss wells up within us and reasserts itself. In some ways they are awful moments as they can rip us apart, in others the opposite in that to remember someone close to us is an act of love, even when the memory may be painful. My favourite part of your poem is: '...no set schedule, no little beeping sound...' You exactly captures how it is.
