Scent Memory

Scent Memory

A Poem by jenniewren (J.W. Bouwman)

i walk

through the grocery aisles

half-filled basket in hand

when the scent

of freshly ground gourmet coffee

(in exotic flavours from

faroff lands

of which you and i

would draw word pictures)

hits -

sometimes i weep

inward secret tears

                      ...and sometimes i smile

         with your memory

today was a good day

God how quiet calm these words were..even the light works of yours sounds so lovely and enchanting
I smell a scent of freshly ground coffee..and exotic flavors from far off
Of which we would draw ,you and I,heavenly word pictures
And I weep,secret tears,then I smile at your memory
Today was a good day..today was a good day
It was a great day for me too ,for I have read such loveliness
You gave me lots of pleasure treading those words
lovely write..

This was short yet packed with emotion. It's nice to have a poem that uses the sense of smell to discribe a momory. I was able to relate to your writing on a whole different level because of that. I always walk through the supermarket shifting through smells that trigger moments of my life that were both good and bad. Very enjoyable!!!!

Great opening ... active verb ... reminds of that Byron line 'she walks in...etc' ... and we moderns immediately see the aisle ... church aisle? but less so today, more likely to be supermarket aisle ... basket half full/basket half empty ... another little subconscious trigger? Great to pluck such poetic insights from the ordinary, to make the ordinary extra-ordinary. You are good at focusing on kay scents also. Enjoyed this. And the previous one.

Very relatable. Scent is the sense tied strongest to memory! We really get a glimpse of the narrator's moment of recognition. It hits us like the smell hit her. Great poem.

sometimes i weep inward secret tears
How good a line is that?
The only problem with this line is that I didn't write it.
Good job
