An Old Friend (Story)A Story by Jen MarksThis is an extremely short story about a renewal of a friendship. We had about 5 minutes to scribble down whatever came to mind in Writer's Craft class, and this is what I came up with.
I hated the way I acted, and I told her that. I had been such a d****e, and had taken her for granted, and I told her that. But sometimes I change; something takes over me, and I'm a whole other person... I didn't tell her that part. The other side of me doesn't like her as much as the real me does... I would never dream of telling her that.
"Let her go, let her go," the other me would tell me. "But she's my friend," I would whisper harshly under my breath. "It's either her or me," the other me would coax.
To tell you the honest truth, I did consider that for a while. Days, to be exact...maybe even a week or two. The other me was a part of me...and ever since it came into my life, the other me became more and more present. It almost got to a point where it was never absent. The other me had taken over. It had consumed me.
There was never a moment where I didn't think about it. If someone was making plans, I would always have to ask the other me if it was avaliable...and if it wasn't, neither was I.
So in that moment, I had to sacrifice one thing that meant a lot to me. I told my friend I was letting her go... I couldn't commit a murder-suicide. © 2010 Jen MarksAuthor's Note
