In the Beginning

In the Beginning

A Poem by Jennifer Johnston
"

A Creation Story

"

In the beginning, we were all shards.

Porcelain shards, ubiquitous, that begged the question--

from what shadowy realm did the red and blue, and orange and gray and talcum white pieces

fly and converge and mould in their space?

What significant event, what stormy pandemonium

brought these crystalline pieces of celestial waste

into the presence of God?

And there they hover like confused and clever captains,

spinning restlessly in their whimsical way,

sometimes murderous, sometimes malevolent,

still other times afraid and benign--

the broken, shattered, equally sharp and dull pieces,

all rocket with their strange bravado,

through an even stranger world.

From what porcelain tree did they grow?

What design of nature, what measure,

what angle did the master protractor choose,

that marched them each through their individual paces,

determined, collected,

What a strange zoo they create.

A wild cacophony of color and sound

and shape and meaning.

And there it is.

It was God"in a rage and a

violence unmatched;

perhaps in great frustration on that Sixth day,

so much so,

that He smashed some heavenly glassware--

bowls and dishes,

and carafes, and flutes,

and jugs and decanters,

and cups and all manner of plates--

and sent them spiraling through time and space,

only to have them crash--

scatter and shard even more deeply,

made more foreign by their distress,

onto the Earth.

And each splinter dripped wet from the cuts on his hands.

And each broken piece was lost.

And each broken piece was embittered.

And each broken piece cried out with their suddenly unique and terrible voice; ‘we are lost!’

But even in eternity there is an every once in a while,

when the shards and stars align.

Meet; and are comforted.

And the pieces are built anew.

Forged in deep and solemn waters.

Only temporarily broken.
