Rabbits In Frilly Hats

Rabbits In Frilly Hats

I took a walk out in the night

It was near too dark to see

But I saw rabbits in frilly hats

Drinking cups of tea.

Then I saw an elephant

As big as big could be

Trying OH, so very hard

To climb up in a tree.

Monkeys hopped and swung and jumped

It was a funny sight to see

I laughed and laughed, then stopped in fright

'cause they all stared straight at me.

They circled round and round and round

As slowly as could be

And when I thought it was the end

They invited me --- to tea.

The kangaroo took from her pouch

A great big buzzy bee,

And they all laughed when I jumped back

When she handed it to me.

The bee flew up and kissed my nose

Then settled on my knee

I got such a fright my ears fell off

And plopped into my tea!

A tall giraffe, stuck in the mud

Begged me to set her free

And when I did, she grinned a lot

Then gave my ears to me.

I jumped up, it was time to go

But I landed on a flea

This made the others very cross

'cause they threw their cakes at me.

I bent down, picked up the cakes

Then turned around to flee,

And hurried home, so very scared

That they’d come after me.

Now I never walk out in the night,

When it’s near to dark to see,

‘cause all those rabbits in frilly hats

might still be drinking tea!

How silly, how whimsical how oh so delightful that at the slightest friction of movement things can go wrong for someone invited for tea at night. By rabbits in frilly hats no less. This poem has a great alice in wonderland feel to it, but slightly more twisted. And the fact it is at the zoo at night and all the animals are involved adds a bizarre aftertaste that makes one wonder if the one telling this had been drinking and had fallen into a hazy stupor while passing by the zoo. This poem is crazy, and very enjoyable.
