Foolish Games

Foolish Games

A Poem by Jeffery Hayes

When we were younger
it was all a game.
taking nothing serious.
Day after day
Life was just a game.

Now that we are older.
Our eyes have been open.
To a world much colder.

I am tired of running
Playing this
Foolish Game
Of cat and mouse.

I put away my childish days.
But remain a child
At heart.

(Sigh)

The heart
Such a fragile thing.
Just one crack
And then it shatters.

Suddenly
All those games we use to play.
Foolish and harmless.
Becomes our undoing
