By The WellA Poem by Jeff BreseeTwas an ordinary scene on an ordinary day...Twas an ordinary scene on an ordinary day, she an ordinary woman on her ordinary way. Doing work of little consequence, she walked to Jacob’s Well. Could she have known that someday all would know her tale?
For as she went to fill her pot a man she noticed there, who were he any other Jew would not have stopped to care. But he took time and bid her, “Dip the cup and give me drink”, and from this she knew that he did not think others think.
For her home was of Samaria. Her people often shunned, but in a quiet voice he spoke and soon her trust he won. For he told her all the things that in her life she ever did, then spoke of living waters and he offered her this bid - that if she would partake of such she’d never thirst again. To this she answered, “Give me thus so I can worship then”.
But in response he answered with a phrase to stand all time - “ye worship… ye know not what”, a haunting truth sublime. For every living soul must also face this thought as they grow up from adolescense into life to make their way. The scriptures challenge all that Life Eternal is to know the one true God who dwells on high, yet we live here below.
And with no way to see him, touch his hand, or hear his voice, the stage is thereby set that every sole must make the choice: to heed his invitation, “plant the seed of faith and try the words that have been given of the prophets by and by”. “And see if not the tree doth grow by study and by prayer, as your load lightens when you trust to cast on me your care”.
So now I write to ask myself as well as each of you, do you know the one you worship, do you know the God that’s true? The sands of time are running thin, the day is at the door when we’ll see him face to face… and face our answers evermore. © 2024 Jeff Bresee |
