Foster Home

A Poem by Riley Bray
"

10/12/15

"
We give pieces of ourselves
To everyone we love
So that when we are torn down by others
At least a piece of us remains in tact
But when those guardians leave our lives
That fragment will leave with them
And if too many leave at once
You are nothing if not broken
Your heart does not regenerate
It simply cannot be fixed
For a part of you is missing
And once its gone,
It cannot return
Thats why I find myself confused
As my children leave my side
Somebody has adopted hem
While I am unable to protest
I remember when I got them
Still brand new and curious of the world
Eyes closed and mews vocal
As they cuddled up beside their mothers teat
I watched as they lost their umbilical cords
And smiled as they opened their eyes
I was beside them as they took their first steps
Ad around them as they slept
Every day I fed their mother
Who in turn fed them
And once they were old enough
I fed and gave them water too
I've played with them for hours
And given each a name
So now that they are leaving me,
Eternally,
Im suffering from a torture so severe
That I have become swallowed
By my own pain
