Rabbit Hole

Rabbit Hole

A Poem by Riley Bray
"

5/28/15

"
I slipped,
I fell,
I lost this round
I won't get up on my own
For a while
But still
this is a way
That I must fight alone
Love me while I'm down
But do not take responsibility
For any pain

I may change,
Become something
You cannot understand
But the girl I've been
Is the girl I love
She might be gone now
But she will come back

Stay by my side
I'm fighting it
Resisting the urge
To devolve
I don't want to be
In this hole again
It only hurts me
If nothing else,
I will end this
Or die trying

This is a nice new kind of love poem. For one, I like that you talk in I. Constantly reading love poems that talk about the main subject's love for another can get old. Second, I enjoyed the fact that your referring tot he bad times. Not just the time after a breakup or a physical separation, but an actual time when things are going bad for one person or another in the relationship and you can't see the light on the other side of the tunnel. And, finally, I like how the poem has a deeper meaning that isn't stated of the fact that the lover is helping the main character get through her (it is a her, right?) trials. She doesn't say it, but the meaning is there and that implication makes the poem that much more beautiful and emotional.
As always, fantastic job. :)
