Victim of My Dreams

Victim of My Dreams

A Poem by Riley Bray
"

5/6/15

"
She lay at the foot
Of a loathsome past
A mess of limbs and tears
Whose liquid life
Has been released
I wonder if she sees me
How I stand and stare
I've known of this brutality
But its still caught me unprepared
I throw myself in front of her
Surprise evident in his wide eyes
His fists pause, for a moment,
But luck is on his side
I do my best
to fight him off
For surely I must try
My heart was created to protect
And I can't lose this time
Battered, bruised and out of breath
I unleash my last defense
And then as he falls to his knees
I see she still lay tense
I grab her hand and start to flee
Though she cannot match my pace
But just as we reach free ground
She's pulled back into his cage
She's a victim trapped deep in my dreams
For that weak girl is really me
Perhaps that's why she stays in my mind
Maybe she just shouldn't be freed
