Set of Sun

Set of Sun

A Poem by Riley Bray
"

~~~For someone important
"
They held the wind by my flame
And I burned
I watched as my hands turned to ash
And my legs into dust
As I crumbled in the midst
Of your heartache
I saw the light in your eyes snuff out
And watched you plummet,
Heard you crack apart with a sickening clatter
And I wept
For those were the screams of a broken man
In that moment I remembered
How with such fragility
You would hold my small hand
How you would lay down beside me
And bury your face in the back of my head
As your large, strong body held me
Immediately I remembered
How with such conviction
You would press your lips against mine
How you conveyed your feelings
Through your passionate, sincere eyes
As you would gently move my hair behind my ear
I toyed with the seas around me
And I drowned
My lungs burst first
Long before my throat filled with the water
For I had not anticipated such overwhelming regret
I wished for you to call for me again
Even though I knew
Your voice was hoarse from having already done so
Far too many times
It was then that I began to realize
How much I love you
Today still I wait
My imagination getting the better of me
Every day as I lay in an empty bed
Wishing to feel your warmth again
Though it would appear he which is my sun
Will rise no longer
I’ve made a nest
In the blackness of my regret
Attempting to rekindle a fire
Which cannot be revived
Why,
I wonder?
I find I’m still in love…
Even now,
Long after he’s left me.
Very touching piece of poetry. To yearn for lost love can be so tiring on the soul.
Thanks for the read.
Dear Riley,
This is very nice. Good flow. Excellent job imparting emotion. We can feel the pain and the regret and we see that some wisdom has been gained. You have learned, albeit a hard lesson. Keep up the honing on this one. Soon it will be razor sharp.
Greatly enjoyed,
Rick
Ouch.
You entrance the reader with your words in such a poignant way that the reader could get a glimpse of all you feel, of all the heartache, the woes, the grief of watching he whom you adore with everything you are fall into the pit of depression and regret that too many people often find they are trapped in (too late, often-times, might I add!)
What makes this poem even more moving are the glimpses into your past that you shed light on; glimpses into your past that you, yourself must miss dearly.
Nostalgia is a dangerous thing. Well done, truly.
Thank you for posting such a great poem. For anyone who has felt heartache, something I'm all too familiar with, it's something one can really relate to. I know I did.
Thanks for the praise! :) It can be hard, yeah, but it definitely helps to write about it.
