Saving FootstepsA Poem by Riley BrayRest in peace Martin, for now you have become the eternal forever.A long time ago tomorrow morning... Moments that stretch on for forever That have been predicted, But have yet to occur. Like my uncle, Professor Powers they called him, For that was his name, And that was what he was. His soul was very old, His heart was very kind, And his talents the very last of their type. Amazing though, That all that pain, misery, and loneliness, Never ceased to make him compassionate. So many things did you say in your drunken state to me, When so loud were you and so boisterous, So old but youthful. "The most profound of poetry is created When there are no words at all." "Nothing moves unless we're looking...nothing changes." Then I didn't understand those two sayings you would utter to me Every Thanksgiving and every Memorial Day When you and the family gathered. Yesterday I still would not have understood, But I think, without you now to confuse me further, I do. You were saying silence speaks volumes, But in intricate, Small ways. You were saying to watch the smaller things, Since everyone develops what they see, And shoot for their larger than life ideals. I see now, What you meant, And what I meant to you. You only ever spoke wisdom with me, Because I see now it was business with everyone else, Every last one. So after attending your midnight vigil in mind, And finding what you so blatantly dangled in front of my face, I immortalize you. Goodnight, Martin Powers.
