The Moment After Mine

The Moment After Mine

A Poem by Riley Bray
"

You decided in that moment after mine. ***Read authors note***

"
In that moment after mine,
Where barely we missed each other
As I delved into a wordless story,
Yet to be written,
And you buried yourself among its pages,
Precisely where my eyes would not see.

In that moment after mine,
Where dispersed was a decision
That you could have made,
And spotlighted the choice you did,
But is it to be regretted?
Will you ponder what could have been in my moment?

In that moment after mine,
As you chose to walk down the right path,
Not the left one,
Do you turn and wonder
What could have occurred
Had you meandered down the other?

In that moment after mine,
Where I forwards
And you went backwards,
Where, had you stumbled, we would have touched,
But you didn't,
Another possibility eradicated at the littlest detail.

In that moment after mine,
Could you have decided a premature death?
Could you have been sole culprit to sorrow?
To Rage, anger, violence?
Would you take your decision back?
Sadly though, it matters not, you can't.

Because in that moment after mine,
You broke a stem from which you could have grown,
Climbed past thorns that could have killed you,
Severed possibilities that could have wounded you,
Made stronger the likes of which you can resort for love, maybe,
Simply in that moment after mine.

Author's Note

Riley Bray
I wrote this thinking of the theory that, based on the decisions one makes, an alternate future is abolished and one path is narrowed. More specifically, I wrote it about the other choice that you didn't make, left to rot. I, for one, am a believer in this theory, and because of that I have a very difficult time making decisions.

I came up with the title thinking of two people that could have run in to each other but because of some reason did not, and one was left wondering. I also think of this person narrating as if they are time. Time's fateful run-in was also a candidate, though it sounded less fancy. :P

This poem is very well written. I really liked the opening lines, "In that moment after mine, Where barely we missed each other As I delved into a wordless story, Yet to be written, And you buried yourself among its pages, Precisely where my eyes would not see."

I like this very much. It does make you wonder of the paths not taken, and the endless possibilities. Very well done :)
