The Moment After Mine

The Moment After Mine

A Poem by Riley Bray
"

You decided in that moment after mine. ***Read authors note***

"
In that moment after mine,
Where barely we missed each other
As I delved into a wordless story,
Yet to be written,
And you buried yourself among its pages,
Precisely where my eyes would not see.

In that moment after mine,
Where dispersed was a decision
That you could have made,
And spotlighted the choice you did,
But is it to be regretted?
Will you ponder what could have been in my moment?

In that moment after mine,
As you chose to walk down the right path,
Not the left one,
Do you turn and wonder
What could have occurred
Had you meandered down the other?

In that moment after mine,
Where I forwards
And you went backwards,
Where, had you stumbled, we would have touched,
But you didn't,
Another possibility eradicated at the littlest detail.

In that moment after mine,
Could you have decided a premature death?
Could you have been sole culprit to sorrow?
To Rage, anger, violence?
Would you take your decision back?
Sadly though, it matters not, you can't.

Because in that moment after mine,
You broke a stem from which you could have grown,
Climbed past thorns that could have killed you,
Severed possibilities that could have wounded you,
Made stronger the likes of which you can resort for love, maybe,
Simply in that moment after mine.

Author's Note

Riley Bray
I wrote this thinking of the theory that, based on the decisions one makes, an alternate future is abolished and one path is narrowed. More specifically, I wrote it about the other choice that you didn't make, left to rot. I, for one, am a believer in this theory, and because of that I have a very difficult time making decisions.

I came up with the title thinking of two people that could have run in to each other but because of some reason did not, and one was left wondering. I also think of this person narrating as if they are time. Time's fateful run-in was also a candidate, though it sounded less fancy. :P

Hmm, I had a different meaning to mind. Imagination was conjured in my interpretation; the distance unable to be crossed even though you're laying beside them; coddled up to them. How unlucky it is to be trapped in the present, as a lover so graciously explores the bounds of thoughts; lost within their mind churning. Well done.

Welcome

This is brilliantly written, I have had thoughts along this line for many years, I have fiddled with the idea of turning them into a novel, but it didn't hold my interest, maybe you should, you seem to have a great grasp on the concept.

Sometimes I think about the significant people in my life, the major events, and I wonder what would have happened if I had not ran into them. Is life a one way street, are our moves predicted? or are there infinite possibilities?

Thanks for the intriguing, contemplative write.

unified string theory, of probabilities. you are a thinker. perhaps there is an alternate you , living a totally different existence right this very moment, in another dimension. is this where deja vu originates? do we share little pieces of our consciousness with alternate planes of existence? provocative and intriguing write indeed!

This is genius. It's always a good thing when you define an abstract concept in abstract terms. I must ponder this...

I think this concept would make an interesting short story.

God!! the possibilities! they drive me crazy, what road to take, what to be in your life! what choices to make, choices choices choices, and then their are the other things you left behind, what if you choose this over that, what if you took the ship instead of the train, but believe me, thinking about that hurts XD it really does hurt your brain! try to close your eyes, consult your heart of which way it wants to go, i'm not saying there will be no regrets because their will! but you can never know because time has already passed!!! which is a great point of the title by the way
this is an incredible poem that captures both the mind and the heart.
my favorite for today
